A Memorial Day Message

This is Memorial Day. This is a day in which many people go to the cemetary to visit the graves of loved ones who have died, many of whom lost their lives in armed combat. But in addition to visting the graves of those who have died, there is something else that is very important to remember...

All True scripture has an inner meaning that is verifiable and directly applicable right now in the present moment. There is a story in the Christian tradition in which Mary went to the tomb of Christ and found that the stone had been rolled back, and that Christ was not in the tomb. Someone appeared to Mary and asked her (paraphrasing), "Why are you looking for Him there in the place of the dead?" The story goes on the say that Christ is risen. One meaning of this story is that we must not look to find a sense of ourselves in that which has died--in recollection--in familiar memories.

There exists a Living Meaning in which, psychologically speaking, we are not looking for the Living amongst the dead. We will not find Real Life within thoughts and feelings about what happened to us in the past--either 10 minutes ago or 10 years ago--Real Life is not there. Real Life--Real Love--is found in Life Itself, which is what Christ represents.

Real Life never disappears! We do not usually see this because we are so often identified with what dies (thoughts about life); much of the time we are caught up in measuring ourselves against what has past. Thought about the past is a tomb that is cut off from Life--that is a fact.

Memorial Day would be far better served if we found a way to love what IS and to BE with it. We can learn to seek Life where Life Is, instead of finding ourselves in "what was."
